How to Save Up in College

By Veejay Detablan - 2:25:00 AM

It's been so long since I last posted here, and I could say that I definitely miss writing! I've posted a thread about saving your money in my fan account and I wanted to put it here in my blog so that I could share it to everyone and not just my mutuals! Let's proceed!

💸 PROTIPS 101 WITH VEEJAY 💸

1. One of the things that I ALWAYS do is to divide my allowance as early as possible.

I make it to a point that I have a fixed amount of budget everyday and I plan what I'm going to buy. As a college student, I have had two cases. First is when I was a freshman, I was commuting back and forth from my home to my school. My parents would give me my money every week, and I'd usually divide my allowance that includes my food, jeepney, tricycle, and lrt fee. I keep a note in my planner that says that I should only use this certain amount on this certain need. As an example, my parents would usually give me 1,500 pesos per week. (And the math starts here, whoopsies!) I would write a note that I should only spend 80 pesos for food PER DAY which makes it 400 pesos a week, 40 pesos for the tricycle going to school (10 pesos per ride, but since I take the tricycle twice going to school, times 2 since I ride twice again going back home, I have to lose the 40), 8 pesos for the jeepney so that makes it 16 pesos to cut off, then 21 pesos for one ride in the train which makes it 42 pesos a day.

LET'S DO THE MATH HERE (Ya'll gotta work hard if ya'll wanna save up):
Total allowance: 1500

Food/week: 80 x 5 = 400
Tricycle/week: 40 x 5 = 200
Jeepney/week: 16 x 5 = 80
Lrt train/week: 42 x 5 = 210

1500 - 400 - 200 - 80 - 210 = 610 pesos saved for a week!

So, if you do this for continuously from the start of the school year til the end, you might save up to a couple of thousands!!

Now, I'm in my junior year, and it's my second year living in a dorm. What I do is that to be able to eat three meals a day, I tell myself to eat breakfast and lunch at my dorm. I bring food from home, or sometimes my sister and I go grocery shopping during weekends with our parents and we have a refrigerator in our dorm so we just store it there. I just spend my money during lunch time, but if I have time to go back to my dorm to eat lunch, I would. I think I've saved more compared to when I was in first year since I had to commute back then. Now, I just have to walk!

2. If you are dismissed early and can still make it to your home without eating, eat at home

I sometimes don't eat out anymore after school if I'm dismissed at around 12:30pm! Usually, I'd keep the money I was supposed to use for lunch so that I could save up more. BUT! If you're really hungry and you really need to eat, then go. You shouldn't risk your health just because you want to save. Health first!
Sometimes, I'd also like to keep that lunch money whenever my friends want to go out for lunch. Treat yourself from time to time.

3. Buy the things you only need.

I know, this sounds cliché. But this really works. I know a lot of us would spend on so many stuff, especially food, clothes and many other stuff, but hold yourself back! It's better to save up for the rainy days than spend it during sunny days, as my mom would like to say it.

4. If you guys keep a piggy bank that could be opened easily, or a bottle to just put your coins in, seal it with packing tape.

Packing tapes (the brown ones) are tough to remove, so if you don't want to spend your "saved up" money, you'd definitely want to do this. Sometime, I have a tendency to just "Add to Cart" whenever I see something cute online, and I'd think I still have money because I keep mine in piggy banks, but sealing it with packing tapes could really stop you from doing that.

*If you choose to recycle bottles, I recommend that you choose to buy the big ones! (4L+) Bottles could harm the environment, but recycling these and making them as coin banks could help you save up! Just cut through the bottle using a hot knife (let an adult do it if you're too young to hold a knife), cut it big enough to fit the coins inside, then seal the top opening with tape. My siblings have tried this when we were young, and it's one of the effective ways our parents taught us.

5. If you're old enough to open a bank account, then open a bank account!

I know that this tip it kind of difficult especially for the young ones, but opening a bank account has motivated me to save even more. Parents, if you have a chance to open accounts for your kids, especially those who can already open junior savings accounts, please do! This is one way to teach them how to become independent since they're having their own bank account! My sister and I started when we were around 13 years old when we got our junior savings account, and it was difficult at first, since we were young and we did not know that much in saving, but having an account motivated me to save up more.

I hope these tips will help you in the future! I've been really saving up since first, I really want to meet BTS and hear them sing live. Second, I want to invest as early as possible for my parents, and that's one of my goals in life.

SO YEAH! That's it, you guys! Follow these tips and let's see how much you'll be able to save up in months! Leave down comments what kind of content you want to see here next time. 'Til the next one!
